Life

Isaac of Cyprus is an early saint of the Church of Cyprus, commemorated on September 21. No detailed account of his life survives, and the daily synaxarion of the Orthodox Church in America, which lists him among the day's commemorations, records no biographical particulars for him.

In the Greek liturgical tradition he is commemorated together with Meletius, the two being identified as bishops of Sitis (also rendered Sites) in Cyprus. The name Isaac (Isaacius) appears in some sources with the alternate form Akakios. Beyond this identification and his association with Meletius, the surviving notices preserve little more than his name, his see, and his feast.

He is honored among the saints of Cyprus, an island with an ancient Christian tradition reaching back to the apostolic mission of Barnabas and Paul. In the absence of a fuller life, Isaac belongs to the large company of local hierarchs and ascetics whose memory the Church has retained chiefly through the calendar of commemorations.

Identity and Commemoration

The principal record of Isaac is liturgical rather than biographical. The Orthodox Church in America lists him on September 21 without a written life, while Greek-tradition calendars commemorate him on the same day alongside Meletius, naming both as bishops of Sitis in Cyprus.

Some notices give Isaac's name in the alternate form Akakios, and Meletius is additionally listed under September 20 in certain calendars. The variation in name and date reflects the partial and sometimes divergent transmission of the memory of early Cypriot saints rather than any settled biography.
