Life

Saint Tryphon was a fifteenth-century hierarch of the Russian Church who served as abbot of the Novospassky (New Savior) Monastery in Moscow before being consecrated Bishop of Rostov. He is commemorated on February 1, the feast having been assigned to that day so that he might be honored together with his namesake, the Martyr Tryphon of Lampsacus.

Before his episcopate, Tryphon was head of the Novospassky Monastery in Moscow and served as confessor to the Great Prince Basil II, known as Basil the Dark. On May 23, 1462 he was consecrated Bishop of Rostov by Metropolitan Theodosius of Moscow. After several years shepherding the see of Rostov, he retired in 1466 to the Savior (Spaso) Monastery in Yaroslavl, where he reposed on December 30, 1468, though certain local documents place his death in 1466.

Burial and commemoration

Saint Tryphon was buried at the Savior Monastery in Yaroslavl, where he had spent his final years in retirement. An earlier schemamonk also named Tryphon, who had likewise been Bishop of Rostov and died in 1328, was buried at the same monastery. The commemoration of Saint Tryphon was transferred to February 1 so that he might be honored together with his namesake, the Martyr Tryphon of Lampsacus, who is also commemorated on that day.

Notes

Distinct from the Martyr Tryphon of Lampsacus, also commemorated this day.
