Life and Monastic Foundation
The synaxarion records that Athanasius came from the Kargopol region to the Olonets land at the close of the sixteenth century. There he established a monastery roughly seventy-eight versts from the site of the future city of Petrozavodsk, in the region of Karelia.
His repose is placed at a suburb of Verkholedsk, near Shenkursk. Beyond these few particulars, the early record preserves little: no firm dates, no account of miracles, and no notice of his relics or formal glorification.
