Righteous Athanasius of Novolotsk

Righteous Athanasius of Novolotsk was a Russian ascetic of the Olonets land, venerated for his holiness of life and commemorated on January 18. According to the synaxarion, he came at the end of the sixteenth century from the Kargopol region into the Olonets land, where he founded a monastery some seventy-eight versts from the place that later became the city of Petrozavodsk.

He died at a suburb of Verkholedsk, not far from Shenkursk. No specific dates of birth or death are recorded, and sources place him variously in the sixteenth or the sixteenth-to-seventeenth centuries, reflecting uncertainty about whether his repose fell before or after 1600.
